When you walk in through those doors to do your audition, there are
a few things you need to know to make a good impression.
The first thing you need to do to impress the person hiring you is
to arrive early. If you didn't get the chance to get your "sides" before
the audition, arrive extra early to give yourself time to read and
prepare before you perform.
In addition to getting there early, make sure you bring your headshots
with you with your resume stapled to the back so this person knows
who you are. This shows you're a professional.
Before you meet the casting director, you'll meet her assistant. Treat
the casting director's assistant like you'd treat her. If you're rude,
it will get back to the casting director herself. There is also a myth
that there are people posing as actors asking the others questions
to see who is rude and who isn't. The smartest thing to do is to pretend
you're in Mayberry R.F.D. and be nice to everyone.
When you walk in to perform, walk in with confidence and smile. Hand
your headshot and resume to the casting director. Don't try to schmooze
the room, just name the piece you will perform and go right into it
unless the CD has some direction for you. After you're done, thank
the room and leave immediately. Don't hang around. Don't ask how well
you did. Just leave.
Back in the waiting room, hang around for a few minutes to see if they
want to see you again for some reason. If after a minute or two you
don't get called back in, go ahead and sign-out with the assistant
and go home.
